Our historic program offers not only historic structure analysis and assessment, but also Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) and Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) documentation. Both programs are administered by the National Park Service (NPS), which has set forth requirements to qualify recordation as HABS/HAER.
To mitigate negative impacts to eligible and listed historic structures, HABS documentation is sometimes necessary to preserve our shared cultural and architectural heritage. HAER documentation is closely related to HABS, but focuses more on the material composition and structural nature of the resource. An example of this type of documentation would concern bridges, which have been continually recorded under HAER standards for years.
